On Saturday, May 8, 2021, the Moore County NAACP will join a coalition of over 180 partners in a hundred locations across the country led by the Transformative Justice Coalition (TJC) in a day of action to honor the legacy of John Lewis by making sure that all citizens' voices are heard by way of the ballot. The actions will include press conferences, “votorcades”, teach-ins, and calls to action in order to draw attention to the proliferation of newly proposed laws which will make voting more challenging to working people and marginalized communities, and to promote the For The People Act (H.R.1 and S 1) to ensure that every citizen can exercise their right to vote.
The Moore County NAACP knows this struggle well. We have been at the forefront of challenging voter suppression laws in North Carolina and we are proud to be in coalition with local organizations to make sure that every eligible voter's voice is heard in elections in our state.
There will be 4 stages to the Day of Action:
1. 12:00 pm, National Broadcast on Voting Rights and the challenges we face (link to be announced).
2. 2:00 pm, Coalition Press Conference and line up for votercade on Carlisle Street across from the decommissioned Southern Pines Primary School.
3. 3:00 pm, Votorcade rolls out.
4. 4:00 pm, Celebration Village teach-ins and calls to action at Downtown Park in Southern Pines.
